Zelenskyy: Russia ‘tortures, kidnaps’ children; Mariupol ‘completely destroyed’: LIVE UPDATES

Zelenskyy: Russia ‘tortures and kidnaps’ children, while Mariupol is ‘completely destroyed’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a speech to the Italian parliament on Tuesday, accused Russian soldiers around kyiv of “torturing and kidnapping children” while saying the eastern city of Mariupol is “completely destroyed”.

“kyiv has gone through tough wars throughout its history. After all the casualties and sacrifices, she deserves to live in peace, just like Rome deserves to live in eternal peace, or any other city in this world,” Zelenskyy told Italian lawmakers. “Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Bombs are falling every day, these attacks are happening in Kyiv and around Kyiv’s cities. Russian troops around Kyiv are killing and torturing.

“They torture and kidnap children, they steal what we have there, they steal everything,” Zelenskyy continued. “That’s what happened in Europe last time because of the Nazis when they were occupying other countries.”

Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that 117 children had died in the war in Ukraine.

“This is the price of the procrastination of pressure on Russia to stop this war,” he told the Italian parliament. “There are thousands injured, tens of thousands of families destroyed and hundreds of thousands of lives ultimately destroyed and homes abandoned.”

Zelenskyy also said that Mariupol is “completely destroyed”.

“Russian artillery and missiles keep destroying Ukrainian cities. Some cities like Mariupol, as you heard, were completely destroyed,” he said. “This city had about half a million people who used to live there. It’s close to what you have in Genoa Italy and now in Mariupol there are only ruins.

Zelenskyy urged lawmakers to secure peace and end the conflict by tightening sanctions against Russia and its oligarchs.

“Don’t be a resort for murderers – block all real estate, all their yachts, all their bank accounts,” he said. “Freeze all their assets. Let them use their influence, but only for peace.
