US senator proposes anti-Russian sanctions for hostile actions against Ukraine – world

WASHINGTON, November 20. / TASS /. Senate Foreign Relations President Bob Menendez has proposed an amendment imposing new sanctions against Russia for hostile actions against Ukraine, the US Congress said on its website.

According to the text of the amendment, significant new sanctions should be imposed if “the Russian Federation engages in military escalation or other offensive operations against Ukraine”.

Menendez insists that the US president should reassess every fortnight whether there is a “significant escalation” in military actions against Ukraine, compared to the situation on November 1, 2021. If the US administration determines that such events actually take place, that is, to impose anti-Russian restrictions within 30 days.

The senator suggests imposing sanctions against senior officials of the Russian state, including the head of state, ministers and high ranking officials. Menendez also insists on sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, as well as against major Russian banks, including Sberbank, VTB, Gazprombank, Promsvyazbank, other Russian agencies and companies, and the country’s sovereign debt.

In addition, the senator suggested providing additional military assistance to Ukraine in the case of the aforementioned scenario.

At the end of September, the US Congressional House of Representatives approved the proposed US $ 778 billion defense budget for the next fiscal year. The Senate will consider its own version, which differs from the variant proposed by the lower house. Subsequently, a reconciliation commission for the two versions will meet. The document must be approved by both houses before it is forwarded to the US president for signature. The process can take several months.

Russian President‘s spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously described Western media reports on “Russia’s plans to invade Ukraine” as “an empty and baseless move to increase tensions.” He stressed that no one should worry about the movement of Russian armed forces on Russian territory because Russia poses no threat to anyone.
