Although Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, the UK broke their tradition of coming last or near the end of the rankings by coming in second after Sam Ryder’s Spaceman performance.

On Friday, a statement was released announcing Ukraine’s official withdrawal from hosting due to the ongoing war, with talks underway with the BBC for the UK to host.

The EBU said: “Following their victory in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in May, the EBU explored options for hosting next year’s competition with Ukrainian public broadcaster UA:PBC, which had previously held the event in 2017 and 2005.

“It has become a well-known tradition that the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest hosts the competition the following year, providing certain criteria, including ensuring that the viability of hosting the event and the security of all stakeholders, including the public, are respected.

“Given the ongoing war since the Russian invasion of this year’s winning country, the EBU took the time to conduct a comprehensive assessment and feasibility study with UA:PBC and third-party specialists, including on the safety and security issues.”

“…Following this decision, in accordance with the rules and to ensure the continuity of the event, the EBU will now enter into discussions with the BBC, as this year’s finalist, to possibly host the Eurovision Song Contest. of the song 2023 in The United Kingdom.”
