Live updates from Russia’s war crisis in Ukraine: World leaders on Sunday condemned the killing of civilians in a suburb of Ukraine’s capital, calling for new sanctions and investigations into alleged war crimes as outrage grew. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called Russian forces “murderers”, “torturers” and “rapists” after hundreds of bodies of Ukrainian civilians were found on the streets of towns surrounding kyiv. He also promised to investigate and prosecute all Russian “crimes” in Ukraine, saying he had created a “special mechanism” to do so.

The Prosecutor General of Ukraine said the bodies of 410 civilians were found in cities in the Kyiv region. Residents of the Ukrainian town of Bucha, near kyiv, harrowingly recounted how Russian troops shot and killed civilians for no apparent reason, Reuters news agency reported. According to civilian accounts, Russian soldiers would go from building to building, drag people out of basements where they were hiding, check their phones for evidence of anti-Russian activity, and take them away or shoot them.

Meanwhile, Russian units have withdrawn from the country’s northern regions to neighboring Belarus, which served as a base for the Russian invasion, Ukraine’s military general staff said in a statement on Sunday. Russian forces have also withdrawn from the Sumy region in northeastern Ukraine, local administrator Dmitry Zhivitsky said, and Ukraine has also taken over some towns in the Chernihiv region. In other recently recovered areas, including all areas around Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said they recovered hundreds of civilians killed in the past few days.
