Trump praises ‘genius’ Putin for deploying Russian troops to Ukraine

Former US President Donald Trump has praised Vladimir Putin for deploying Russian troops to Ukraine.

Amid escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia on Tuesday, Putin order troops in separatist-held parts of eastern Ukraine as part of what he called a “peacekeeping mission”.

The order came hours after he signed decrees recognizing the independence of Moscow-backed Ukrainian breakaway territories – the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic.

Commenting on Putin’s actions, Trump said it was “great” and called the Russian leader “very savvy” for portraying the troops as peacekeepers.

According to the New York TimesTrump, who spoke on a radio show, accused US President Joe Biden of failing to address Putin’s recognition of separatist territories.

“I walked in yesterday and there was a TV screen, and I said ‘that’s genius,'” Trump reportedly said.

“Putin declares a large part of Ukraine independent. Oh, that’s wonderful.

“Putin is now saying, ‘It’s independent’, a large part of Ukraine. I said, ‘How smart is that?’ And he’s going to come in and be a peacekeeper.

“It is the strongest force for peace I have ever seen. We could use it on our southern border. There were more army tanks than I had ever seen. They’ll keep the peace, okay. No, but think about it. Here is a guy who is very savvy.

The former US president said earlier that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would not have happened if he was still in office.

After the deployment of Russian troops in Ukraine, the United Kingdom announcement sanctions against five Russian banks and three of its wealthy individuals.

Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister, said the sanctions were the “first tranche” and “first barrage” of measures in response to Russia’s actions.

Likewise, Biden had noted the United States will deploy additional troops and equipment to Baltic members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Eastern Europe.

Biden also said the United States was applying sanctions to two Russian financial institutions, adding that sanctions would also be imposed on Russian elites and their family members.

The US president has warned of new sanctions against Russia if Putin does not withdraw his forces from Ukraine.
