Aug 24 (Reuters) – Russian authorities have arrested politician Yevgeny Roizman known for his criticism of the Kremlin and, more recently, the military campaign in Ukraine, Russian news agency TASS reported on Wednesday.

Roizman, a former mayor of the city of Yekaterinburg, is under investigation for “discrediting the Russian military“, TASS reported, citing Yekaterinburg’s security service.

Roizman was one of the few Kremlin critics to win mayoral posts following a series of large opposition protests during President Vladimir Putin’s 2012 election campaign.

Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special military operation” aimed at ensuring its own security and authorities have prosecuted a number of activists for calling it a war or criticizing Russia’s action.

Ukrainian forces mounted fierce resistance and the West imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia in an effort to force it to withdraw its forces.
