Russian Federation dismayed by Japanese Prime Minister Kishida: Kuril Islands

Modern times of Tokyo

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently became the leader of Japan following the voluntary resignation of Yoshihide Suga. Hence, an internal transition to the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) ahead of the general election later this month.

However, even before the parliamentary elections – which should see the PLD be the main party – Kishida is already upsetting the Russian Federation. According to Moscow’s political elites, the territorial question was settled decades ago. Therefore, only the goodwill of the Russian Federation can change the territorial angles and not the foreign political pressure.

Vladimir Dzhabarov, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said: “I think it is wrong that the Japanese Prime Minister made this statement, because, in my view, it complicates his subsequent negotiations with our leaders. It is clear that Moscow will not ignore this kind of statement.

Dmitry Medvedev, vice-president of the Security Council of Russia, strongly reprimanded Japan two years ago over the visit of politicians to the Kuril Islands (Sakhalin oblast). He pronounced, It is our land, it is an entity of the Russian Federation. These islands are part of the Sakhalin region. Why should we care? “

Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of the Russian Security Council, recently lambasted Japan. He said, some Japanese politicians “blindly follow the instructions of the United States and voluntarily engage in anti-Chinese and anti-Russian schemes. “

Patrushev continued, these Japanese politicians “Seek to dig into the past to try to settle old scores with Russia”.

The Modern Tokyo Times, in a previous article, said: “In truth, President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation is more willing to address some of Japan’s concerns. Yet these concerns, according to Putin, can only be resolved if Japan provides guarantees that the US armed forces will not deploy its military to parts of northern Japan. Also, for Putin, it is imperative that Japan be sincere towards the Russian Federation. Equally important to Putin, Japan’s foreign policy must disentangle itself from US containment policies targeting China and the Russian Federation respectively. In saying this, Putin is not interested in ceding the main areas of the Kuril Islands – instead, more remote areas of lesser importance provided that Japan follows the above demands and other areas of litigation. “

Japan calls the Kuril Islands the Northern Territories. However, given that Japan and Germany were seen as the aggressors of WWII – and for Japan, that aggression began before WWII against China and others – it is conveniently overlooked by Japan that if they had won the war, then they would have obtained vast swathes of territory all over Asia. Therefore, after losing the war, events changed on the ground regarding the legacy of what had happened before.

Dzhabarov said, “For us, this dispute was closed in 1945. We told them on several occasions that we were ready to conclude a peace treaty without any discussion of land claims.”

Now even before Kishida is elected by the general public (LDP is likely to be re-elected despite discontent in Japan), it appears that little will be achieved unless a policy overhaul is implemented.

Ironically, the same Japan that is obsessed with sovereignty over the Kuril Islands (Northern Territories), is the same nation that tolerates American bases all over the country – especially in Okinawa (Ryukyu).
