Russia uses Ukraine invasion threats for political purposes, Austrian Chancellor says

Russia is fully prepared to invade Ukraine and use it for political purposes, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has said.

According to a Ukrinform correspondent, he said so in his speech to the Federal Council (upper house of parliament) on Thursday, February 3.

“There is a very serious situation between Ukraine and the Russian Federation and the escalation occurring at the borders is worrying. The Russian Federation now has everything at hand to launch an invasion of Ukraine. The Federation of Russia also understands it. They use it politically,” he said.

Nehammer added that the European Union was doing its best to promote dialogue, including within the Normandy format. “The Normandy format has been restored, which is very important. [this format], Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France are sitting at the same table. And that, in my opinion, is very important,” he said.

He added that EU member states also provide direct support to Ukraine. According to him, “Austria is doing the same”. In this context, he referred to his planned visit to Ukraine and his participation in an important Ukrainian-Austrian forum, which must be seen as a show of support for Ukraine “in this tense period”.
