RUSAL has announced the opening of its first phase of what it reports to be the world’s most advanced low-carbon aluminum production plant, Taishet Aluminum Smelter (TaAZ), in Siberia.
The state-of-the-art foundry claims to be one of the greenest in the world, running on clean energy from Siberian hydroelectric power stations, which, combined with modern gas cleaning equipment and a water circulation system. closed water, have a low impact on the environment. Total CO2 emissions will be among the lowest in the industry. Pre-operational checks and tests will begin today.
TaAZ is the third low-carbon aluminum smelter to be built by RUSAL, with an overall cost of over $ 1.69 billion, creating more than 1,000 local jobs. Once fully operational, the smelter is expected to produce 428,500 tonnes of low carbon aluminum per year in its first phase and will play a critical role in the overall social and economic development of the city, with RUSAL fully committed to support local communities.
Sales of low carbon aluminum produced at Taishet will be focused on the extrusion and rolled products segments, helping to meet the strong demand for low carbon aluminum around the world. About a quarter of production will serve the Russian domestic market.
On December 17, a ceremony was held in Taishet to mark the opening of the factory, in the presence of the representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Federal District of Siberia Anatoly Seryshev, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Federation from Russia Victoria Abramchenko, Governor of Irkutsk Region Igor Kobzev and General Manager of RUSAL Evgenii Nikitin.
Bernard Zonneveld, Chairman of the Board of Directors of RUSAL, said: “The opening of our new low carbon aluminum smelter in Taishet is an important step in RUSAL’s journey towards decarbonization as we seek to supply the world with low carbon aluminum. Our aluminum will have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry, which will help further strengthen our ties with customers who are leading the green revolution. Our smelter in Taishet will help meet the strong global demand for low carbon aluminum.
RUSAL Managing Director Evgenii Nikitin said: “Throughout the construction of the Taishet Aluminum Foundry, the most modern and environmentally friendly technologies that exist in the global aluminum smelter industry. aluminum were used, with almost fully automated technological processes. We plan to replicate this model by building new low-carbon aluminum production plants at the site of the Bratsk, Shelekhov, Krasnoyarsk and Novokuznetsk facilities, as part of our sustainable modernization, bringing us closer to our Net target. Zero in 2050. “
