Russian president Vladimir Poutine called on the country’s government to install a new universal swimming lessons program aimed at teaching children what it calls “a basic life-sustaining skill.” (Rsport)
The program will be created at the state level, in collaboration with the All-Russian Swimming Federation, with the possibility of using modular and mobile swimming pools as a means of achieving the goal.
The targets for the number of children, the structure of the program, as well as the funding are still pending; However, Putin wants formal approval of the program by June 30, 2022.
Russia is the 57th nation on the list of drowning deaths, having a total of 5.8 per 100,000. The United States ranks 140th, in perspective, with 1.42 drowning per 100,000 constitutions.
According to various previous media reports, Putin, 69, swims regularly for his fitness, as well as for running and weightlifting.
The directive comes after the September decree to the same effect by the Russian government, which approved a new nationwide physical culture and sport program. Aimed to enter into force on January 1, 2022, the program “aims to achieve the national development goal of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2030”.
