Here are some developments from regions across Ukraine:

Kyiv: Russia confirmed on Friday that it fired missiles at the capital on Thursday evening and said it destroyed an arms factory, while Ukrainian officials said at least one residential building was hit and a journalist who worked for Radio US-funded Free Europe was killed in the strike.

The attack, as UN Secretary-General António Guterres wrapped up a visit to Kyiv, rattled the relative calm that had returned to the capital in recent weeks after Moscow shifted its offensive to eastern Ukraine .

Kharkov: The Kharkiv regional governor said on Saturday fierce battles raged around the town of Izyum as Russian forces struggled to advance, and shelling hit areas east of the wider region overnight . He said on Telegram that artillery fire had eased somewhat in the city over the past 24 hours, but he called on residents to remain vigilant and refrain from large gatherings, even for funerals.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday that Russian forces had deployed military units as reinforcements in Kharkiv and in particular around Izyum.

Mariupol: The Azovstal steelworks and surrounding area have come under fire as embattled Ukrainian fighters cling to their last stand in the southern port city. Ukrainian officials have reported a dire situation inside the plant as food and water supplies dwindle, with injured civilians and soldiers requiring medical attention.

Mykhailo Vershynin, head of the Donetsk region police patrol, told the Post that the area around the facility was shelled by Russian forces. “We are ready to leave the territory of the Azovstal plant,” he said. “But that requires safeguards.”

In the Donbass region: Russian forces are launching an offensive on Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts, where the governor of Luhansk said on Saturday that artillery fire had damaged dozens of houses in recent days. Local officials said earlier this week that infrastructure damage has left many residents without power or water.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday that troops had repelled more than a dozen attacks in Donetsk and Lugansk in the past 24 hours. He said earlier this week that Russian forces had captured some urban settlements as they sought to extend their grip on the two provinces that make up the eastern Donbass region.
