TEHRAN – Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu at a meeting in Moscow on Tuesday insisted on the need to strengthen military and defense cooperation between the two countries .
The two senior military officials also rated the level of mutual interaction, especially in the military field, as positive and pushed for closer cooperation.
The two sides also expressed interest in improving the level of cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The two main commanders also held talks on an agreement to be signed between the armed forces of the two countries.
The Iranian general also met his Russian counterpart, Valery Gerasimov, on Monday. During the meeting, Bagheri discussed two main things: arms affairs with Russia and regional developments, especially Afghanistan.
For his part, the Russian Chief of Staff said: “Iran is a close partner of Russia and relations between the two countries will continue to develop in a friendly atmosphere.”
He also said that bilateral talks will continue in the future.
Bagheri’s visit to Russia came immediately after his trip to Pakistan, where the two countries agreed to hold joint naval exercises.
Upon arriving in Moscow on Sunday, General Bagheri said he would continue to implement an arms deal including the purchase of fighter jets, trainers and combat helicopters in from Russia.
During a meeting with Iranian experts at the Iranian embassy in Moscow, the general stressed that the agreement was signed the day after the lifting of the UN arms embargo against Iran. .
Based on UN Security Council Resolution 2231, the arms embargo against Iran ended in October 2020.
The military leader also said that Iran and Russia cooperate in the fields of military training, military competitions, exchange of experiences, defense industry and joint cooperation for total security. in Syria.
Bagheri also said he was visiting Russia as a new administration has come to power in Tehran, whose priority is to promote ties with eastern countries.
“This trip takes place at the beginning of the thirteenth administration, and the administration of Mr. Raisi has a specific look at the countries of East and Asia, and also the accession of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Covenant. Shanghai is an important event, and cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia will certainly be developed in this regard, ”Bagheri said, according to IRNA.
“We are cooperating with the armed forces of Russia, and in recent years this cooperation has widened. At this point, my visit is at the invitation of the Russian Minister of Defense. In addition to the bilateral military issues we have and must continue, the issue of Afghanistan is one of the issues that will be specifically discussed by both sides, ”Baqeri said.
General Bagheri also said that developments in Afghanistan would certainly affect countries in the region, including Iran, the Russian Federation and other countries.
Russia will hold a conference in Afghanistan on Wednesday October 20. Russia invited the Taliban to attend the meeting. Iran is also expected to hold a meeting of foreign ministers from countries bordering Afghanistan.
