ANKARA from Turkey – EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed Russia’s military build-up around Ukraine in a phone call on Saturday.
The call came ahead of a January 10 US-Russian security meeting in Geneva.
They reaffirmed the support of the EU and the United States for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine and stressed the need for Russia to defuse and fully implement the agreements. from Minsk, the EU said in a statement.
Any further military aggression against Ukraine will have massive consequences and significant costs, he said.
They also discussed bilateral and multilateral diplomatic engagements following the proposals presented by the Russian Federation regarding Moscow’s views on security arrangements in Europe.
They underscored the enduring partnership and common US and EU commitments to transatlantic security and to address common security challenges.
They agreed that any discussion on European security would take place in coordination and with the participation of the EU and to keep in close contact on all priority areas.
Russia seized and occupied Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and remains the de facto authority. Moscow in the same year also began supporting separatist forces in eastern Ukraine against the central government, a policy it has maintained for the past eight years. (Anadolu)
