China, Russia to hold new round of strategic security consultations amid closer bilateral ties

China and Russia will hold a new round of strategic China security consultations from Sunday to Monday, just days after the two countries’ top leaders met face-to-face in Uzbekistan on Thursday, which forged even closer ties. between China and Russia.

The high-level strategic interactions between China and Russia reflect the stable cooperation and mutual trust of the two countries in the field of security, which is of regional and global importance amid the instability and uncertainty that crosses currently in the world, Chinese experts said.

At the invitation of Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, Secretary Nikolai Patrushev of the Security Council of Russia The Federation will visit China for the 17th Sino-Russian strategic security consultation from Sunday to Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning announced on Sunday.

The China-Russia strategic talk comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on Thursday, during which Xi said China is ready to work with Russia to extend mutual support on issues concerning their respective core interests.

The bilateral consultation on strategic security could implement some of the Sino-Russian cooperation concepts discussed at the SCO with more specific details, Yang Jin, an expert at the Institute of Russian Studies, Eastern Europe and Central Asia from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Sunday.

Yang Jin noted that the upcoming security talks should mainly focus on the current situation of regional stability, given the recent escalation of regional conflicts on the European and Asian continents. Topics such as the fight against terrorism, separatism, drug trafficking as well as border security could be addressed during the consultation.

The 16th round of China-Russia strategic security consultations was held in Russia in May 2021, during which the two sides discussed multilateral cooperation and exchanged views on the stability of the situation in Afghanistan, the Middle East and in the Asia-Pacific region, according to media reports.

Many new challenges have emerged since the last consultation, such as the Ukrainian crisis, developments in Afghanistan, as well as food security and the epidemic prevention crisis, which not only have a serious impact on security continents, but also will indirectly influence the recovery and development of the regional economy, Yang Jin said.

Yang Jin pointed out that compared to the previous consultation, this year’s edition could involve a wider range of issues and also resolve “the most pressing” challenges facing the two countries. The Taiwan issue could also come up on the occasion of such bilateral interaction given the complexity of the situation across the Taiwan Strait with constant Western interference and provocation.

Nikolai Patrushev will also attend the 7th meeting of the China-Russia Law Enforcement and Security Cooperation Mechanism during his two-day visit to China.
